M365 Teams (How To) Set Your Status

Your status in Microsoft Teams is automatically set based on your Outlook calendar and the activity on your computer. After 15 minutes of inactivity, your status will automatically be set to Away. Additionally, you can set your status manually.

To set your status

  • Click on the person icon in the upper right corner of your Teams application.
Note: Your person icon is your picture. If you have not set a picture, this will be your initials.
  • Your current status is the first item in the drop down menu.
  • Hover your mouse over your status to see more options in the pop-out menu.
  • Select a status from the pop-out menu.
    • Available - Lets people know you are available to collaborate
    • Busy - Lets people know you are busy
    • Do not disturb - Lets people know that you are busy and blocks incoming messages until you turn it off. Note: You can set priority access for specific people so that their messages will still be delivered when your status is set as Do not disturb.     • Be right back - Lets people know that you are away temporarily.
    • Appear away - Lets people know that you are away and may not receive their communication.
  • You will now appear as whatever status you selected.


To sync your status back with your Outlook calendar:

  • Click on the person icon in the upper right corner of your Teams working screen.
  • Your current status is the first item in the drop-down menu.
  • Hover your mouse over your status to see more options in the pop-out menu.
  • Select Reset status from the pop-out menu.
  • Your status will now reflect your availability based on your Outlook calendar.
