Digital Learning - How Students Can Prepare for the Start of the Semester

This guide provides UWM students with resources and best practices to successfully use technology for learning using online tools. By preparing your technology and accounts ahead of time, you can avoid common issues and start your course smoothly. Below are steps on how to access your courses, set up your computer or mobile device, make digital learning tools more accessible, secure your accounts and prepare for exams.

Finding Your Courses in Canvas

All your enrolled courses will appear in Canvas. Once you log in, check your Dashboard or your Courses list to find your classes. If a course isn’t visible, you may need to mark the course as a favorite or it might not be published yet by the instructor.

Learn How to Use Canvas

If you are new to Canvas, or would like a refresh on knowledge, there are a range of student training resources available. Reviewing this information can help you familiarize yourself with Canvas features like submitting assignments, checking grades, or posting in discussions.

Prepare Your Computer

Update Your Operating System

Make sure your computer’s operating system and software are up to date. Install the latest updates for Windows or macOS before the semester begins. By following these steps, you are less likely to run into problems.

Use a Supported Browser

Canvas works best with modern web browsers. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are preferred browsers. Mozilla Firefox is also well supported and is recommended for students using screen readers or other assistive technologies. Avoid using Safari unless it’s your only option, as Safari can cause unexpected issues with Canvas.

Prepare Your Mobile Device

Whenever possible, you should use a computer for coursework, but mobile devices can be a helpful supplement – especially if you have limited computer access.

Ensure Device Access

If you do not have a personal computer or reliable internet, UWM may help. Students who cannot afford a computer or internet service may be able to get technology on loan or purchase a low-cost device through the university

Check the Dean of Students’ Laptop Loan Program for short-term laptop loans in emergencies, or UWM Surplus for affordable used computers

If you are using mobile devices to access your course, use apps to access university services as a best practice.

Check with your instructor to determine if other mobile apps are needed or suggested.

Prepare your internet connection

If you need internet service, check with your housing to see if service is provided as part of your lease. If your housing does not provide internet, search for internet providers in your area.

Once connected, conduct an internet connection speed test. If your internet connection is slow (< 5Mbps) or fluctuates, consider contacting your ISP for assistance.

You may be able to use a public WiFi hotspot to conduct your work. If you are unable to afford internet, the Dean of Students may be able to help. View the Dean of Students information on computer loans and surplus technology for more information.

If you are using a public WiFi hotspot or cellular internet, a VPN is recommended.

Prepare your webcam and microphone

Always test your webcam video and mic audio when using Zoom or Teams.
