Canvas Access - As a UW-Madison Student, How Do I Access my Collaborative Course?
This article describes the steps for UW-Madison students to access a UW System collaborative course for the first time. It also describes the steps for accessing the collaborative course after initial registration.

Before You Begin
- The instructor of your course will send you a shareable link from your Canvas course. If you do not yet have the link, contact your instructor.
- To access Canvas, you will use your UW-Madison NetID and password.
Register for the Course
- Click the special link your instructor sent you.
- A web page will open that will ask you to select your organization. Select "UW-Madison" then click the "Go" button.
- When prompted, enter your UW-Madison NetID and password.
- If you have multi-factor authentication, you will be prompted to verify your identity at this point.
- If you are already logged into a UW-Madison service, you will not need to re-enter your NetID and password.
- When prompted, click the "View Privacy Policy" link to learn about Instructure's privacy policy. Otherwise, click the "Enroll in Canvas" button.
- You will receive a message stating that you have been successfully enrolled in a course. Click "Go to your Dashboard" to see your courses.
Access Your Course After Registration
- Visit the UWM Continuing Education login page (https://uwm.edu/canvas/continuing-ed/).
- Click "Login with your UWM or UW System login" to the right of the "Login to Canvas" button.
- A web page will open that will ask you to select your organization. Select "UW-Madison" then click the "Go" button.
- When prompted, enter your UW-Madison NetID and password.
- If you have multi-factor authentication, you will be prompted to verify your identity at this point.
- If you are already logged into a UW-Madison service, you will not need to re-enter your NetID and password.
- Once on your dashboard, click the Canvas course you wish to access.
Getting Additional Assistance
- My UW-Madison NetID or password are incorrect: contact the UW-Madison Information Technology Help Desk. Ensure they are aware that there is an issue with your NetID.
- I am unable to select my organization: contact the UWM Help Desk Ensure they are aware that you are taking a UW-Madison course. Refer to this KB article to expedite assistance.
- I am on a mobile device Help Desk Article on Logging in on a Mobile Device as Continuing Education Ensure you have an updated version of the Canvas Teacher and Student App.
- All other issues: contact Canvas Tier I support. Ensure they are aware you are taking a UW-Madison course. Mention the program and course you are participating in.
