Accessibility (How To) Customize Font and Font Size

This article will describe how to customize your font and font size while using the Firefox or Google Chrome browsers.

Font Accessibility and Customization Friendly Browsers

There is no direct way to change the default font or font size through some of the websites that UWM utilizes for education, including sites such as Canvas. Instead, you can use the font settings in some browsers to provide better customization.

Firefox

Firefox is currently the adaptable browser for accessing websites that do not have built-in font customization such as Canvas.

To install the Firefox browser, click the following link: Download Firefox Browser.

After installing Firefox, follow the steps below to customize your font and font size.

Firefox Font Customization Steps

  1. Open the Firefox Browser and click the Open Application Menu button on the top right of the screen.

  2. A drop-down menu will appear. Click the Settings tab.
  3. Scroll down to Language and Appearance and then Fonts. Click the button in front of the text that says Default Font to change your font type.

  4. To change your default font size, click the button in front of the text that says Size.

  5. Click on the menu that says Advanced. This will allow you to further customize your fonts and font size while making sure your chosen fonts will be used.
  6. After clicking the Advanced button, a menu will pop up. Further customize your font preferences, and then make sure the box next to the text stating Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above is unchecked. This will ensure your font preferences are used on the websites you visit.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome has font customization options available, but is less robust than Firefox in the selection of font type. You will be able to set your minimum font size for all sites, but your preferred fonts may be overridden by a website's code. There is not currently a built-in option to force your preferred font to be used on all sites on Chrome.

To install the Google Chrome browser, click the following link: Chrome Download.

After installing Google Chrome, follow the steps below to customize your font and font size.

Google Chrome Font Customization Steps

  1. Open the Google Chrome Browser and click the Customize and Control Google Chrome button on the top right of the screen.

  2. A drop-down menu will appear. Click the Settings tab.
  3. You will be redirected to the Settings page. Click the button on the left side of the screen that says Appearance.

  4. Click the button that says Customize Fonts.
  5. Customize your fonts to your preference, and set the minimum font size for the pages you visit.
