Mac (How To) - Compress or Expand a File in Mac OS X

Compressing large files or folders is useful because they will take up less disk space. This process is particularly good for archiving backups of folders. This document will outline how to compress and expand folders in Mac OS X.

Compressing or "Zipping" a File/Folder

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Find the file/folder you want to compress.
  3. Hold down control and click on the file or folder, and click Compress from the shortcut menu.
  4. This should produce a .zip file with the same name as the file/folder in the same folder as the file. If you compress multiple items at once, the file will be called Archive.zip.

Expanding or "Unzipping" a File/Folder

  1. To expand or unzip a file/folder, simply double-click the .zip file.
