Using Multi-Factor Authenticator App (MFA) with unreliable WiFi or Cellular Service

If you have the Microsoft Authenticator app installed and set up on your account, and you need to access your account but do not have phone service or WiFi, the authenticator app can generate a one-time use code that will allow you to authenticate. This is useful if you are in an area with no phone service or WiFi, or traveling overseas with no service, or if your phone service has been disconnected but you still have the phone in your possession.
  1. To begin using the MFA App without reliable WiFi or cellular service you must have the app downloaded to your cellular device. If you do not have the app, please follow the directions here.

this is what the MFA App Icon will look like within Apple Store or Android Store
Note: This is the Microsoft Authenticator App Icon (Multi-Factor App/ MFA App)

  2. Once the app is downloaded you will need to login to the website you are wanting to access (i.e Canvas, PAWS, Outlook, etc..).You should then be asked to Approve sign in request by entering in the code that appears on the screen. You must click on "I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator App right now".

    approve sign in request

  3. On the next screen you will be presented with more options. Choose "Use a verification Code"

choose your verification code on screen

  4. The next screen on your computer will give you the field to enter in your "Code" once it is generated from your Authenticator App.

    insert passcode

  5. You will then need to open your Authenticator App on your cellular device and select your UWM email account.
