Canvas - How do I register for, and access my Continuing Education course?

This article provides instructions on how to register for, and revisit your Canvas Continuing Education course. Such courses are used for the School of Continuing Education, pre and post-education courses and some for-credit courses where participants do not have UWM ePantherIDs.

In general...

If your instructor emailed a link to class, follow the link provided to register for the class. Instructors may have also sent an invite email to you. Once registered you can access the course by visiting the UWM Canvas website. Click Continuing Education in the site navigation, or go directly to https://uwm.edu/canvas/continuing-ed/.

  • Guests of UWM who used a self-enrollment link, or accepted an invite email, can click the "Log into Canvas" button.
  • Guests of UWM who used Canvas Catalog can click the "Login to Catalog Dashboard" link.
  • UWM and UW System students can click the "Login with your UWM or UW System login" link.

Join a course using an invite

Students may be invited using an invite. If the student already has access to Canvas, they will see an invitation box once they login. Click the Accept button to gain access to the course.

When a student is invited, an email will also be sent to students. In the email, click the Get Started button. Upon clicking, students will be prompted to select "I Have a Canvas Account" or "Create My Account"

If students do not receive the invite, students should check their email account's spam folder.

Option 1: Click "I Have a Canvas Account"

  1. If you have a UWM or UW System username ans password, click the "UW Employee / Faculty / Student" button.
    1. Fron the "Select Organization" list, choose your home institution.
    2. Enter your home institution's username and password.
  2. If you have a non-UWM or non-UW System Canvas account, click "UW Continuing Education Student".
    1. Enter your previously set login and password.

Option 2: Click "Create My Account"

  1. Enter your desired password
  2. Select your time zone.
  3. Click the Register button.

Join a course using a self-enrollment link or invite

A course instructor may invite students to their course using a self-enrollment link. Upon visiting the link, students will be prompted to login using either "UW Employee / Faculty / Student" or "UW Continuing Education Student".

Option 1: Click "UW Employee / Faculty / Student" to use your UWM or UW System login

  1. Click the "UW Employee / Faculty / Student" button.
  2. Fron the "Select Organization" list, choose your home institution.
  3. Enter your home institution's username and password.

Option 2: Click "UW Continuing Education Student"

I have a UW System Continuing Education account

If you have previously created an account, it should be used to register for their Continuing Education course.

  1. Click the "UW Continuing Education Student" button.
  2. Enter your previously set login and password.

Click the Forgot Password link if you need to reset your password.

I need to create a UW System Continuing Education account

To use this option, you will need a Join Code. If your instructor did not send a Join Code use this form to find it.


  1. Click the "UW Continuing Education Student" button.
  2. Above the Login box, click "Need a Canvas Account?"
  3. Click the "I'm a Student" button.
  4. In the fields provided, enter the requested information.
  5. Click the "View Privacy Policy" link to view the terms and conditions.
  6. Click the "Start Learning" button.

You will receive an email that will allow you to complete registration. If you did not receive the email, check your email account's SPAM folder. If you are still experiencing issues, contact Canvas Support.

Join a course using Canvas Catalog

If your instructor sent a link to Canvas Catalog (Example: http://uwm.catalog.instructure.com/browse/sce/courses/012413), click the link to continue. Otherwise, click the Browse Canvas Catalog link on the UWM Canvas Continuing Education login page.

Option 1: Use your UWM or UW System login

Participants with existing UWM or UW System credentails should use it to register for their Continuing Education course.

  1. Click "Sign in here".
  2. Click the "UW Employee / Faculty / Student" button.
  3. Fron the "Select Organization" list, choose "UW-Milwaukee".
  4. Enter your home institution's username and password.

Option 2: Use your existing UW System Continuing Education account

If participants have previously created an account, it should be used to register for their Continuing Education course.

  1. Click "Sign in here".
  2. Click the "UW Continuing Education Student" button.
  3. Enter your previously set login and password.

Click the Forgot Password link if you need to reset your password.

Option 3: Create a New Canvas Continuing Education Account

Only create a new account if the participant has never created a Canvas Continuing Education account.

  1. Enter your full name and email in the fields provided.
  2. Review the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
  3. Click the "I agree to the Acceptable Use Policy and acknowledge the Privacy Policy." checkbox after you have reviewed the two links.
  4. Click the "Enroll in Course" button.

You will receive an email that will allow you to complete registration. If you did not receive the email, check your email account's SPAM folder. If you are still experiencing issues, contact Canvas Support.

Accessing your course

UWM and UW System students (except UW-Madison) may login using their home institution's Canvas website. All UW System students may also login by visiting the UWM Canvas Continuing Education login page.

Guests of UWM may visit the UWM Canvas Continuing Education login page. Click the "Log Into Canvas" button.
