Security - Request Access to Another Person's Information
Occasionally a client may contact the Help Desk requesting for permission to access files or data information that does not belong to them. The files or data information may already belong to someone else who has left the University or is currently not available to provide the information, thus resulting in a request of information access that would need to go through the Information Security Team.
What to Gather:
ePanther ID [ Both from the requester and the current owner of the data ]
Alternate e-mail address and phone#
Preferred method of contact
Best time(s) to be reached
WM [ Both the client and current owner of the data ]
Specific application containing the requested data [ Outlook, pantherFILE, uFiles, pantherLIST, etc. ]
Name of the file(s) or specific data information for which access is needed
Reason for request
Length of time for access request [ limited, permanent, ownership change? ]
For these type of requests, the expectation is that any request for access to something that is not owned by the requester should be escalated to the Information Security Team for further review. The Information Security Team will determine who will need to provide approval of the request and will ultimately either approve or deny the requester access. We cannot guarantee the requester/client approval to the requested files or information.
Situations in which this request would be considered are as follows:
- Requests for access to an email folder or calendar
- Requests for access to any type of intellectual property
- Reassignment of ownership of any type of intellectual property
- Requests for access when an employee has left the University
- Requests from the UWM Police or any other law enforcement agency

Close out all HD1 tasks and create a task for the InfoSec Team. All related requests should be escalated to the Information Security Team after gathering as much information as is available.
