Office 365 (Outlook on the web) - Junk Mail, Deleted Items, and the Clutter Folder

In Outlook, there are both Junk Mail and Deleted Items folders.

Outlook offers three folders that manage mail that you do not want to see in your inbox. However, these three parallel folders do perform slightly different tasks.  It is important to note that across Junk Mail, Deleted Items, and the Clutter Folder no mail will be deleted or removed from your account unless you perform the action manually.

Two of these folders, the Junk Mail folder and the Clutter Folder, have settings that can be adjusted by going into mail settings and navigating to the correct section. Mail settings can be accessed by clicking the gear in the top right corner, and the clicking mail.

Junk Mail: When Junk Mail is set to its standard default settings, the folder functions to automatically remove unsolicited e-mails.  E-mails are chosen based rules set up by the e-mail administrator, however you can adjust these default settings. Clicking on the gear in the upper right hand corner and selecting Options>Mail>Accounts>Block or Allow will enable you to create a more personalized Junk Mail experience.

Deleted Items: A majority of the e-mails that are removed from you Inbox will end up in the Deleted Items Folder. This folder should be considered your first line of defense to prevent your self from accidentally deleting important e-mails.  Again please keep in mind that e-mails will never be removed from your account unless you manually do so.  To clear this folder quickly you can right click on the Deleted Items Folder and then select Empty Folder. Remember any item removed from this file is permanently deleted.

Clutter Folder: The newest addition to the Outlook folder system, the Clutter Folder is considered a smart folder and will monitor your mail habits with in the Outlook environment to remove e-mails you commonly delete from your Inbox automatically. You may turn off the Clutter Folder any time by clicking the gear in the upper right hand corner, selecting Options>Mail>Automatic Processing>Clutter and turning the Clutter Folder off.
