Web Development - Training - Adding WordPress to Laravel Valet

A guide to adding WordPress to your local machine using Laravel Valet.

Make sure that you following instructions in Web Development - Training - Setting up an environment with Laravel Valet to setup Laravel Valet with the proper directories.

Step 1: Download WordPress

Visit https://wordpress.org/download/ and download the latest version of WordPress. Unzip it into a directory under ~/Code/ (e.g. wordpress).

Step 2: Setup WordPress

In your browser, visit http://wordpress.dev (or whatever you called the folder) and you should see the familiar WordPress setup. Go through the setup, inputting database credentials where needed. You should use a tool like Sequel Pro or MySQL Workbench to setup additional databases in your local MySQL installation.

Once setup is complete, you should have a fully working WordPress installation.

Step 3: Installing UWM Web Identity Theme & SAITS Web Identity

Our theme is a child theme based on UWM Web Identity. Therefore, we need to install this in your WordPress installation.

Your WordPress installation should be located at ~/Code/wordpress so let's run this command to change into the themes directory and checkout the two themes we need:

$ cd ~/Code/wordpress/wp-content/themes
$ git clone https://git.sa.uwm.edu/pp-fellowship/uwmwebid.git

You can now activate the Student Affairs Identity theme within WordPress.
