Canvas Gradebook - Removing Zeros That Were Automatically Assigned by the Missing Submission Policy

This procedure guides instructors through the process of removing zeros from the Gradebook that were automatically assigned by the Missing Submission Policy.

Background

In Canvas Gradebook, instructors can set a Missing Submission Policy that automatically assigns zeros to all missing submissions. Note that Canvas labels submissions as Missing if a student does not submit work to a Canvas Quiz, Discussion, or Assignment by its Due Date.

Procedure for Removing All of an Assignment’s Zeros

Do the following to remove zeros assigned by the Missing Submission Policy for one or more assignments:

1.  Go to the Gradebook.

2.  Click the Settings icon.

3.  Select the Late Policies tab, uncheck Automatically Apply Grade for Missing Submissions, and click the Apply Settings button.

Note: This step prevents new zeros from being automatically applied to missing assignments.

4.  Locate an Assignment in the Gradebook, and click the kebab to the right of the Assignment’s name.

5.  Click Set Default Grade.

6.  In the Default Grade window, do the following:

  • Leave the grade value blank.

  • Check Overwrite Already-Entered Grades. IMPORTANT: This will wipe out ALL of the Assignment's grades (not just zeros) and will replace the scores for the Assignment with a dash.

7.  Click the Set Default Grade button.

8.  Click OK when a confirmation popup appears showing the number of changed scores.

All of the Assignment's scores are replaced with dashes.

9. Repeat steps 4 - 8 for each Assignment whose zeros you want to remove.
