Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) - Live Proctoring via Zoom Enabled

In addition to locking down test-takers' browsers when they are taking assessments delivered through Canvas Classic Quizzes or Canvas New Quizzes, instructors who have Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) enabled in their Canvas class can also configure Respondus LDB to allow instructors to monitor their students live over Zoom while students are taking an online exam.

When you enable Respondus LDB for a Canvas class, select the “Allow instructor live proctoring for this exam...” setting in order to enable live proctoring via Zoom with Respondus LDB.

Typical Use Case

Respondus Live Proctoring with LockDown Browser is typically used for online assessments delivered through Canvas Classic Quizzes or Canvas New Quizzes where the instructor wants to lock down students’ browsers and monitor the exam takers live over Zoom.

The Respondus Live Proctoring solution is intended for small classes (under 25 students) with synchronous online assessments where all test-takers start and submit their Canvas quiz within the same timeframe.

Note that Respondus Live Proctoring requires the use of Respondus LockDown Browser.

What Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) - Live Proctoring with Zoom Enabled Does

  • Locks down the browser of the text taker:
    • Prevents student from opening additional files
    • Prevent student from opening additional browser windows & tabs
    • Prevents student from leaving quiz once student starts quiz
    • Prevents printing
    • Prevents use of clipboard
    • Prevents multiple monitor use
  • Allows instructor to monitor students’ webcams live via Zoom.

  • The Respondus Live Proctoring solution is not intended for use with:
    • Classes of over 25 students
    • In-person classes
    • Asynchronous assessments, where students have a longer time frame (often days) to take the assessment
  • Once a student starts taking the assessment in Canvas, the student cannot change the Zoom microphone and camera controls because the student’s computer is locked down. In other words, if a student is muted when they start the Canvas quiz, they cannot unmute themselves until they have submitted the quiz, and vice versa.
  • Instructors cannot view activity on students’ computer screens.
  • Respondus Live Proctoring with LDB does not record students’ webcams – Respondus Monitor records webcam audio/video.
  • Respondus Live Proctoring cannot be used with Respondus Monitor.
  • iPads cannot be used with Live Proctoring.
  • Does not record webcam or screen
  • Does not provide automated ID verification of test taker
  • Does not monitor or flag suspicious behavior of test takers
  • Does not monitor or record test taker’s IP address
  • Does not monitor or record test taker’s computer and internet performance

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is a companion application instructors can use with Respondus LockDown Browser (at an additional cost).  As with Respondus LDB, students’ browsers are locked as they take their online assessments through Canvas Classic Quizzes or Canvas New Quizzes. Additionally, Respondus Monitor records the webcam audio and video of students and (optionally) records their computer screen activity as they take the assessment. Respondus Monitor subsequently uses computer vision technology to flag suspicious events that the instructor can review after the assessment.

Respondus Monitor is intended for use with remote test-takers or for hybrid situations.

Hybrid situations - Note that if you have some students taking the assessment in a proctored lab and other students taking the exam at a remote location, you can enable Respondus Monitor and check Allow This Exam to Additionally Be Delivered in a Proctored Lab.When a student begins a test with this setting applied, they will see an initial screen that allows them to select if they have a webcam or if they are at a proctored location.

What Respondus Monitor Does

  • Locks down the browser of the text taker:
    • Prevents student from opening additional files
    • Prevents student from opening additional browser windows & tabs
    • Prevents student from leaving quiz once student starts quiz
    • Prevents printing
    • Prevents use of clipboard
    • Prevents multiple monitor use
  • Records webcam activity of test takers. (Note that there is no way to deselect webcam recording.)
  • Optionally records computer screen activity of test takers
  • Flags suspicious webcam activity so instructor can review webcam recording
  • Indicates things like internet interruption
  • Optionally performs ID check
  • Optionally prompts students to show and submit a picture of their written work at the end of the exam. The instructor can then view the submitted images in the Class Results section of the LockDown Browser dashboard.

What Respondus Monitor Doesn’t Do

  • Cannot be used with Respondus Live Proctoring (i.e., cannot monitor online exams live via Zoom.)
  • Cannot track student IP address.
  • Cannot track student's computer performance.
