Student Guide to Setting Up Your Profile and your Canvas Notifications

This tutorial provides important beginning-of-semester information for setting up your Canvas Profile and how to ensure that you are receiving Canvas notifications.

Setting Up Your Profile

Please follow all of the instructions on this page very carefully. It is critical that you update your own user settings in Canvas!

Your profile includes contact information and other details that can help your instructor get in touch with you and can help you stay up to date on course information. Complete the following steps to set up your Canvas profile: 

  1. Set your time zone to be sure you are submitting assignments on time.
  2. Add a profile picture to help your instructor and peers get to know you.

PLEASE NOTE: Your profile picture and other user settings will be associated with your entire Canvas account, not just with an individual course.

How to Receive Notifications:

  • In your user settings, you can add an alternative email address.
  • In your notification settings, you can choose to be notified by email and customize how often you will be notified.
  • In the mobile app you can choose to allow notifications and how often you will be notified.

Select notification preferences carefully to ensure you receive important course information!
