How do I publish (or re-publish) a video to the Media Gallery?
This tutorial will explain how to publish (or re-publish) a video to the Media Gallery of your Canvas courses site.
Before you Begin:
This tutorial covers adding a video or audio file that has ALREADY been uploaded to My Media. Videos may have be added to your My Media account in multiple ways.
- Recordings of face-to-face lecture session may have been uploaded to your My Media account through Kaltura Classroom Capture as part of lecture capture system established by UWM's Classroom Services.
- You may have uploaded a video to My Media at another time, for a different course or semester.
- If you ordered captions for your video, you would have uploaded your video to My Media through the Account tab in Global Navigation.
- A colleague may have uploaded a video and added you as a Co-Editor or Co-Publisher.

How do I add Media Gallery to my course navigation?
Step #1
Login to Canvas and navigate to the Canvas course site, in which you'd like to publish the video.
- Click Settings tab in the course navigation on the left.
Step #2
Locate the Media Gallery item in the list of disabled navigation items.
- Click the menu (looks like three dots) to the right of Media Gallery and select the Enable option.

- When Media Gallery appears in the list of enabled navigation items, click the Save button.
How do I publish a video to the Media Gallery in my Canvas course site?
Step #1
Login to Canvas and navigate to the Canvas course site, in which you'd like to publish the video. If you have not already added Media Gallery to your course navigation, follow the steps above.
- Click on the Media Gallery item in your course navigation.
- Click the Add Media button.
Step #2
This will show all the media that has been uploaded to your My Media account via the methods described above. If you do not see the video you are looking for, and you made the recording in a UWM Classroom using Kaltura Classroom Capture as part of lecture capture system established by UWM's Classroom Services, please contact Classroom Services for assistance locating the recording.
- Locate the video that you’d like to publish to your Media Gallery and click the check box in front of the entry. You can select more than one video if desired.
- Once you have selected the appropriate videos, click the Publish button.
How do I re-publish a video to the Media Gallery in my Canvas course site?
Important Note: In some situations you and your students may receive a "access denied" error when attempting to view videos published to the Media Gallery. If this error occurs, please un-publish and then re-publish the video. This action should restore the video for viewing in your course site Media Gallery.
Step #1
Login to Canvas and navigate to the Canvas course site, in which you'd like to publish the video. If you have not already added Media Gallery to your course navigation, follow the steps above.
- Click on the Media Gallery item in your course navigation.
- Locate the video that you’d like to re-publish to your Media Gallery and click thumbnail image.
Step #2
You'll see a window displaying a preview of your video.
- From the media view, pull down the Actions menu on the bottom right.
- Select the Publish option.
Step #3
- Locate the course in which the video has already been published and deselect the checkbox in front of the title.
- With the the box unchecked, click the Save button.
Step #4
- Locate the course in which the video the you'd like to republish to the course and re-select the checkbox in front of the title.
- With the the box checked, click the Save button.
