Alternatives to Scantron Testing
Canvas Quizzes
Canvas offers the same multiple choice, multi-select, and true/false question types found in Scantron Exams. Utilizing these question types allows for automated grading in Canvas and reduces grading workload.
Giving exams in Canvas allows instructors to utilize question banks able to randomize questions and shuffle answer choices to support academic integrity. Canvas Quizzes also enable instructors to support ARC-issued accommodations by providing time extensions or alternative due dates.
Please see the following guides for getting started:

Using Canvas Quizzes for In-Person, Proctored Exams
Canvas Quizzes can be administered during face-to-face class sessions to replicate the experience of a traditional in-class exam. This approach provides the efficiency of automatic grading in Canvas while maintaining the security of a proctored setting.
How it Works:
- The instructor books a computer lab. Alternatively students may also bring a laptop, tablet, or other instructor-approved device to class.
- The instructor publishes the quiz in Canvas and students complete it within the scheduled exam time.
- Because the exam is in person, instructors or TAs can proctor the exam and monitor the room while students work.
Recommended Settings
- Set a Time Limit – Require completion within the class period.
- Shuffle Questions/Answers – Randomize to reduce answer-sharing.
- Use Question Banks – Pull randomized subsets of questions for each student.
- Restrict Quiz Availability – Open only during the exam window.
- Lockdown Browser – Tools like Respondus LockDown Browser may be available to prevent students from opening other tabs or applications. Lockdown Browser is not free and must be paid for by the academic department.
Departmentally Funded Scantron Option
Departments that wish to continue using Scantron testing can purchase licenses from Remark Software, a scanning solution that reads data from plain-paper bubble sheets, and Remark Test Grading, a hosted tool designed for grading printed tests via optical mark recognition (OMR). These tools allow institutions to continue using paper-based assessments (with bubble sheets) while digitizing responses for analysis and integration with digital systems.
