TidyUP
TidyUp is a cleanup tool inside Canvas that helps instructors declutter and streamline their Canvas courses by removing unused or duplicate files.
TidyUP Features
- Identifies unused files and content: It scans your Canvas course and flags files that are not linked or used anywhere, so you can safely delete them if they’re cluttering your course.
- Cleans up duplicates: It finds duplicate files and lets you decide which version to keep.
- Simplifies file management: Instead of digging through the Files area manually, TidyUP gives you a clear overview of which items are in use and which are not.
Enabling TidyUP
- In your Canvas course, go to Settings.
- Then select Navigation.
- Scroll down the page. Locate TidyUP.
- Click the kebab to the right of TidyUP.
- Select Enable.
- Click the Save button.
TidyUp will now appear in your course's left-hand navigation.
Using TidyUP
- After you have enabled TidyUP in your Canvas class, click the TidyUP link in your course's left-hand navigation.
- Click the Scan button.
- You can do the following:
- Click the red trash can icon next to a file or folder to delete it. Note that this action cannot be undone.
- Click the pencil icon next to a file or folder to:
- Change its file/folder name.
- Hidden or unpublished status.
- Change its file/folder name.
When to Use TidyUP
The best time to use TidyUP is after you've copied a course from a past semester and have set up the course contents for the current semester. TidyUP helps instructors identify and remove unused files, so you can start the new semester with a course that contains only the content you're using.
Best Practices
Consider using the Export Tool to make a backup copy of your course before using TidyUP because once you delete content using TidyUP, you can't "undelete" it.
Exercise Caution if You Use Quiz Banks in Your Class
Unfortunately, TidyUP does not currently recognize files used in question banks (such as images). As a result, these files may be incorrectly flagged as “unused” and recommended for deletion. Before deleting, always double-check to ensure the file is not linked to a question bank.
