Preserving H5P Quiz Data Each Semester
At the beginning of each semester, instructors typically copy the contents of a previous semester's Canvas course into a new Canvas course shell. While this is an effective technique for most course elements, copying H5P activities along with the rest of your Canvas course may cause you to lose H5P student data from previous semesters, which does not align with UWM's records retention policy.
Do the following to preserve past student H5P assessment records:
How does H5P store quiz data?
-
H5P stores student quiz attempts in the H5P Reports tab, not in Canvas. (The instructor is the only one who can see this data.)
- The H5P Reports tab reflects data across all Canvas courses using the same H5P quiz when you copy the contents of your Canvas course to a new semester.
-
The copied H5P quizzes still function properly, but the quiz data is connected to any previous quiz attempts from past semesters.
What happens if you add or delete questions in an H5P quiz copied from another Canvas course?
- H5P deletes all previous student H5P quiz attempts (detailed question-by-question responses) from the Reports tab in the H5P quiz.
-
While this deletes past H5P quiz attempts from previous semesters, the Canvas Gradebook still retains the H5P quiz grades, so not all previous data is lost: just the students' question by question responses.
Note: Minor changes to an H5P quiz (such as quiz settings) will not delete past quiz data.
How do I preserve student H5P quiz data?
- Create a duplicate of the H5P quiz (with a new name) in H5P.com.
-
Embed the new version of the H5P quiz into the Canvas course instead of reusing the old H5P quiz.
