Proctorio - Getting Started Guide for Instructors
About Proctorio
Overview
Proctorio is composed of two parts.
- First: A (free) Chrome extension that links to Proctorio help, and monitors students desktops during the exam
- Second: A LTI tool integrated into Canvas.
Proctorio works best with Canvas Quizzes Classic. Third-party exams (eg. Wiley, or Pearson exams) require extra steps to integrate with Proctorio. CETL continues to recommend against using New Quizzes.
Before Continuing
For many, Proctorio may not be necessary, and when possible we encourage instructors to identify alternatives to Proctorio’s use. Exam alternatives to Proctorio may be found below, or feel free to reach out to Lane Sunwall (sunwall@uwm.edu), Ed Price (ecprice@uwm.edu), or Kathy Pinkowsky (pinkows4@uwm.edu) [L&S courses only] to further discuss Proctorio or alternatives.
That said, we recognize some instructors may still need to have students take exams from home, and so our contract with Proctorio has continued. For those instructors, they may enable Proctorio in their course by following these steps.
Please be aware that this procedure will take up to 5-10 business days at the beginning of the semester (given high staff demand), and 3-5 days after 15 September.
- Step 1: Request Access to Proctorio for your course. Here is a video with Proctorio Activation Request Instructions – video instructions for requesting activation of Proctorio in one’s course. From within the Canvas site in which you would like to use Proctorio, select UWM Canvas Tools in the Course Navigation Bar. In the Instructors box, and under the heading “Your Courses,” select Request an External Tool. Scroll down to “By Special Request Only” and select Proctorio.
- Step 2: Meet with CETL. Upon completion the By Special Request Form will generate an email (on which you will be CC’d) to CETL. We will begin the process of adding Proctorio to your course. CETL will schedule a short meeting with you to discuss Proctorio updates, usage, and student impact, prior to final activation in your course.

Student Considerations
To notify students that they are being recorded as they take an exam(s), a communication can be sent to the entire class. For example, the one below:
Going forward in this course, Proctorio will be used to proctor online examinations and ensure the integrity of course examinations and student grades. When you begin the exam, a small Proctorio pop-up menu with a preview of the area being recorded will let you know you are being recorded. View Proctorio's statement on privacy.
Alternative exams or another solution will be necessary for students who do not have a Mac, PC, Chromebook, or an external webcam and microphone (Proctorio does not work with either smartphones or tablets).
Proctorio requires that students use Chrome (not Firefox).
Students should be instructed to log-in to their course and prepare for the exam 30 minutes prior to its scheduled start, if applicable.
Purchasing Proctorio
If you are planning to use Proctorio this semester: you can request Proctorio’s activation via an External tool request: Canvas - External Tools - Request for a Tool to be Added to My Course
Business units (schools/colleges/departments) are required to pay for their courses use of Proctorio at the rate of $22 per student license--every student that takes any number of Proctorio-enabled exams in spring 2023, the university will be charged $22. So if a student takes 1 exam – the university will be charged $15.00. If the same student takes 1, 2, or any number, of additional exams, the total price charged will remain $15.00.
Licenses are by-student, not by-seat.
History
Proctorio was adopted by campus as an emergency measure to facilitate instructors move to online teaching during the COVID-19 lockdowns in the spring of 2020. This use was made possible from funds provided by the CARES Act.
Tips for Proctoring
Proctorio is an artificial-intelligence (AI) based student proctoring tool that can record both students and their desktop during an exam. Proctorio AI reviews these recordings, flags suspicious activity, organizes this data into a report, and makes all recordings and reports available to faculty after the exam is finished.
Instructors using Proctorio must notify students that they will be recorded during the exam. Instructors can notify students by sending an all-class communication (see considerations below).
