Canvas - When PAWS Enrollments and Section Changes are Made
This article explains how changes are applied in Canvas regarding student enrollments, instructor assignments, and course sections. Changes are exported in bulk from PAWS to Canvas and then processed or "ingested." The article provides a schedule for when changes made in PAWS are sent to Canvas and subsequently applied, typically by the following morning. Note that special timings apply for certain weekends around the start of a semester.
How changes are applied in Canvas
Student enrollments and un-enrollments, and instructor course assignment changes are exported from PAWS to Canvas in-bulk. Once the bulk files are sent from PAWS to Canvas, they must be processed or "ingested".
What changes are applied to Canvas from PAWS?
When the ingest is complete, the following changes are made in Canvas:
- Student enrollment and un-enrollments are processed.
- Instructor assignments and un-assignments are processed.
- New course sections are created.
- Canceled course sections have all enrollments dropped.
- Sections are cross-listed or de-crosslisted.
When will changes be applied?
In-general, changes made by approximately 4:00 PM are applied the following morning.

1 - The first weekend before the start of a semester, and the first weekend after the start of a semester, changes made on late Thursday and during the day Friday are applied Saturday morning, not Sunday morning.
