Accessibility - Media Accessibility Tip Sheet
Reviewing and Editing Captions
ARC historically provided media captioning services for instructors when a student registered with our office was approved for Media Accessibility and was enrolled in the instructor’s course. However, the recent implementation of UW System Administrative Policy 655 (SYS 655) has ushered in a different approach. Messaging from UWM’s Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and Chief Information Officer, along with SYS 655 and related guidance, states that each individual is responsible for ensuring their course materials are digitally accessible.
Below are tips and links for reviewing and editing captions, whether the media is in Kaltura or on a different platform.
For instructor-owned videos in MyMedia (Kaltura):
- Log into Media Space (MyMedia) and find the video you need to review and/or edit.
- Click on the title of the video you want to review/edit.
- To review and edit captions, follow the instructions in the knowledge base article, "Editing Video Captions in MyMedia."
For videos with an outside URL (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)
These videos must be transferred to your MyMedia space in Kaltura and marked as Private. Note: It is possible to upload a YouTube video or video from another outside platform; however, the automated captions also may upload with the video. In this case, you are unable to edit these captions and instead should follow the instructions below.
- Convert the outside URL to an .mp4 file through 4k Downloader, as needed.
- Log into Media Space (MyMedia) by going to Guest (top right corner) and Login. Log in with your UWM username only, not the full UWM email address.
- Next to your name, now in the top right corner, click Add New.
- Choose Media Upload and choose the file from your computer that you would like to upload. This should be the converted video and will be listed in an .mp4 format.
- Click on the title of the video you want to review/edit.
- To review and edit captions, follow the instructions in the knowledge base article, "Editing Video Captions in MyMedia."
