Vevox Student Getting Started Guide

This article summarizes how Vevox is used in UWM courses and what to expect when participating in a session. It also outlines in-session participation (polls, quizzes, Q&A, surveys), accessibility, privacy, and quick troubleshooting.

Joining a Presentation

If the activity is in your Canvas course, open the assignment or topic in your course (usually in Modules or Assignments). Launching from Canvas ensures your identity is linked for grading when enabled by your instructor.

Otherwise, your instructor will display a QR code or a 9‑digit Session ID. On your phone or laptop, open vevox.app and enter the Session ID (or scan the QR code).

What You Can Do In Vevox

Live polls & quizzes

  • Select an option (or enter text/number) and Submit before the poll closes.
  • Quizzes may award points for correct answers and, if enabled, additional points for speed.
  • Results/leaderboards are at your instructor’s discretion.

Q&A board

  • Post questions and upvote others to highlight priorities.
  • Depending on settings, posts can be anonymous or identified.
  • If moderation is ON, your post appears after approval.

Surveys & self‑paced quizzes

  • Surveys can be completed at your own pace within the time window set by your instructor. You may edit answers until the survey is closed.
  • Self‑paced quizzes (created within the Survey tool) provide individual scores and, when enabled, correct answers or explanations after submission.

Accessibility

  • Vevox aims to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. For best results, use a current version of Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
  • If you require accommodations (e.g., extended time or alternate formats), contact your instructor before graded activities.

Privacy & Data

Session identification (anonymous vs. identified) is set by your instructor and determines whether activity can be linked to you and whether grades can sync to Canvas. if you have concerns regarding your grade or participation, contact your instructor, first. If you are unable to share your concerns, contact the UWM Help Desk.

Troubleshooting

“Invalid Session ID” or can’t join

  • Confirm the 9‑digit Session ID and try again, or scan the QR code.
  • If provided a direct link, ensure you are signed in to Canvas before opening a graded activity.

Stuck on “Waiting for poll”

  • This is normal between questions. Keep the Vevox tab open; content updates automatically when a poll opens.

Nothing loads / spinner

  • Refresh the page; switch to a stable network; temporarily disable VPNs or ad‑blockers.
  • Try a different browser or device.

Screen reader or keyboard issues

  • Use the web app at vevox.app and open it after your assistive tech is active.

For Further Assistance

  1. Ask your instructor first (they control session timing, anonymity, and grading settings).
  2. If Vevox will not load from Canvas or you receive errors, contact the UWM Help Desk. Include: course, section, instructor, what you clicked (Module/Assignment), device & browser, and any error messages.
