Canvas for Instructors - What external tools can be added to a course?
Instructors can utilize many external tools in their courses. There are two types of external tools in Canvas: tools that must be enabled by CETL, and default tools within Canvas that can be enabled by instructors.
Requesting an external tool from CETL
Many of the tools that must be manually turned on by CETL include textbook publisher integrations.
Textbook Publisher Integrations
- Cengage MindLinks products
- FlatWorld Homework
- Hawkes Learning
- McGraw-Hill Education products
- Macmillan LaunchPad products
- Oxford University Press
- Pearson MyLab Education products
- W.W. Norton inQuizitive
*Note: CETL only supports enabling these tools. To receive direct support for using textbook integrations, please contact your publisher representative.
For more information on how to request the tool directly from your Canvas course, please see: Canvas External Tools - How do I request for a tool to be added to my course?
Other manually turned on tools through CETL
- H5P (Pilot Program)
*Respondus 4 is not integrated within Canvas but it can be used to get tests and quizzes into Canvas. This tool can be requested from CETL.
Tools automatically enabled in every Canvas course
Some tools are universally enabled in every Canvas course. This means that instructors can enable them without requesting them from CETL.
- Attendance (Roll Call)
- Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
- Films On-Demand
- Kaltura MyMedia
- Proctorio (Secure Exam Proctor)
- Redirect Tool
*Note: CETL supports all of the tools in this list.
These tools might require instructors to modify their course navigation to enable the tools. Please see: Using an external tool in my Canvas course to edit course navigation.
