SharePoint sites can be deleted by an Microsoft 365 administrator, a SharePoint administrator, or a user with Full Control permissions on the SharePoint site.

There are two different types of SharePoint sites. The first type is an Enterprise SharePoint site. This is the standard SharePoint site that is created by submitting a request to Cloud Services. The other type is a Teams SharePoint site. This SharePoint site is created when a new Microsoft Team is created and is used to store and collaborate documents within that team.

  2. Click on Site Settings.
  3. Under Site Actions, click on Delete this site
  4. Click the Delete button.
  5. Verify that you are deleting the correct site and click Delete.

When a SharePoint site is deleted, it is sent to the Site Collection Recycle Bin (also called the second-stage recycle bin). The site will remain the Site Collection Recycle Bin for 93 days. Within this time period, the site may still be recoverable. After this time period has passed, sites and all their content and settings are permanently deleted, including document libraries and files, lists and data, and any sub-sites.

SharePoint Online retains backups of all content for 14 additional days beyond actual deletion. If content cannot be restored via the Recycle Bin, an administrator may be able to contact Microsoft Support to request a restore within this time frame.
