UWM Digital Certificate Service
The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee has partnered with the InCommon Certificate Service to provide unlimited SSL certificates.
Requesting a Digital Certificate
1. Generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). The certificate may be generated by a vendor or from the server or device that will use the certificate.
Note: The CSR must be 2048 bit and contain the following fields:
- Country (2 character ISO code): US
- State/Province: Wisconsin
- Locality: Milwaukee
- Organization: UW-Milwaukee
- Organization Unit: SampleOrg
- Common Name (Fully Qualified Domain Name): sample.fqdn.uwm.edu
2. Submit the CSR
Submit the CSR via Email to: cert-order@uwm.edu
Some things to note:
- The cert needs to be approved by IAM before it is issued. This will occur within 3 business days.
- Indicate if the certificate is multi-domain or not
- A shared mailbox, Email list or other team email address that will be used as the point of contact for the certificate.
- Any comments or additional info
Note: Local Registration Authority Operators (RAO’s) reserve the right to reject certificate requests that conflict with the terms of the agreement with InCommon.
3. After submission
After submission the cert-order team will review the certificate request and reply if any questions or additional information is required to complete or approve the certificate request.
If the request is approved Emails notifications will be sent out from the certificate platform CertiNext with information about your cert request including links and instructions on how to download the requested certificate.

Where can I request a revocation of my certificate?
Submit the request via Email to: cert-order@uwm.edu and indicate why you want to revoke your certificate.
What kind of turnaround time can I expect?
Turnaround time will be 3 campus business days. Therefore, it is imperative that you plan accordingly. Certificates will not be approved outside of normal campus business hours.
Why is my cert only valid for a certain number of days?
Certificate lifecycles are dictated by the industry rules and SSL/TLS validity
March 15,2026 – Max lifespan of 200 days
March 15, 2027 – Max lifespan of 100 days
March 15,2029 – Max lifespan of 47 days
Which domains are eligible for certificates?
All hostnames within UWM’s .edu domain and other domains owned by UWM are eligible for certificates through the InCommon agreement. If there are questions about other domains they can be submitted to cert-order@uwm.edu
